Although it has been an unusual pandemic year globally, the spirit of our ancient Chinese traditions are alive and well as the Calgary Dragon Boat Society would like to wish you and your family a “Happy Dragon Boat Festival”.

It commemorates the death of Chinese poet, Qu Yuan, known for his patriotism and contributions to classical poetry and also a holiday during which “zongzi”, sweet and savoury filled sticky rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves that Chinese consume during the festival.

Video premiered, October 8th, 2020 and was produced by our partner, GlobalFest.

One of the highlights of the festival are the intense and exciting dragon boat races held as teams paddle towards the finish in synchronicity and teamwork.

Last weekend, some of our members lent a hand to draining the immense volume of water accumulated in the boats during the past two winters. While most of us are saddened with the cancellation of our 2021 Calgary Dragon Boat Festival, we are using this opportunity for boat maintenance and organizing next year’s practices and festival.

The resiliency and camaraderie of our community is a testament that our sport will return in 2022, stronger and better than ever.
