Are you and your team ready for 2019 Dragon Boat Paddling Season?

To help you and your Team prepare, the Calgary Dragon Boat Society is offering a Paddling Clinic for you Coaches and Paddlers the weekend of May 31 to June 2. The Clinic will take place out of the Calgary Canoe Club located at North Glenmore Park.

In addition, those Clubs looking to participate in the 2019 Canadian Dragon Boat Championships being held in Regina this summer, we have something for you. Races are schedule to be run late Saturday afternoon that count as 1 Qualifying Regatta.

Over the weekend event, Paddlers and Coaches will improve paddling technical skill, stroke mechanics, and overall paddling performance to help make you and Clubs “race ready” for the 2019 Paddling Season.  While improve your individual skills, the sessions are also designed to allow you to have some fun and meet fellow paddlers that you see paddling out on the Glenmore Reservoir.

The participation fee also includes a lunch on both Saturday and Sunday.

Tom Arnold

Local Coaches and Paddlers will receive direct coaching from Tom Arnold the Program Director for the Senior B Canadian National Team, and Head Coach of VI Paddling’s Gorging Dragons in Victoria, BC.  As a paddler who started with a recreational corporate team and worked his way up to the Premier and Senior A National Teams, Tom understands what it takes to improve at every level from beginner to high performance.  He’s used that experience to coach 12 teams (ranging from Premier to Senior B and C) to Club Crew World Championships appearances in the past 6 years, and has been asked to lead clinics for paddlers of all abilities throughout the Western US and Canada.


May 31 – Coach the Coach Session Friday Evening

A session for our local Team Coaches to spend some one-on-one time with Tom talking about coaching strategies and drills to handle specific challenges facing coaches prepare their Teams for the upcoming racing season.  [SOLD OUT]

June 1 & 2 – Paddling Clinic (2 days)

These sessions are designed for individuals that are familiar with the fundamentals of Dragon Boat Paddling, an active member of a Dragon Boat Club and expected to participate in all sessions. [SOLD OUT]

June 1 @ 5:30pm – Qualifying Regatta Team Registration 2019

For those Clubs wanting to qualify for the Canadian Dragon Boat Championships being held July 18 – 21 2019 at Wascana Lake, Regina Saskatchewan.

The Calgary Dragon Boat Society will be hosting head-to-head races on June 1st ( at 5:30 pm ) at Glenmore Reservoir. These races are open to any crew who wishes to participate and are intended to serve as an eligible Dragon Boat Canada sanctioned qualification event.

    Hi there,
    Can someone join the practice sessions but not compete in the festival? Unfortunately I cannot attend the festival but would love how to learn how to row. Any ideas?
