On the weekend of May 31 to June 2nd the Calgary Dragon Boat Society hosted an advanced paddling clinic with a guest coach of Tom Arnold from Victoria.  Tom is the head coach for the Canadian National Senior B (50+) Program that is going over in August to Thailand for the  in the 14thIDBF World Dragon Boating Racing Championships. This was the third time the Society had hosted a clinic like this.

The weekend started on Friday evening with Tom hosting a Coach the Coach session where 30+ coaches from all over Alberta. The focus of the Session to talk about how to teach stroke technique, develop a coach’s eye and correct common faults through learning drills for on the water. This was a first for the Society to offer a Session specifically for Coaches. The goal to help the Coaches learn ways to transfer learning’s to their respective Team competing in the Calgary Dragon Boat Festival.

Over 80 paddlers from Calgary, Edmonton and Lethbridge attended the camp; time was split between water sessions and video review sessions.

In addition, on late Saturday afternoon two qualifying races were held for five clubs going to the Canadian National Dragon Boat Championships in Regina this summer.  Teams from Calgary & Lethbridge raced in first a 500 meter race and then a 200 meter race.

The Calgary Dragon Boat Society would like to thank the participants and especially all the volunteers who helped make the Paddling Camp a success!

Special shout out goes to Tom Arnold, Stephen Fournier and Marc Richea for all the hard work!!!
