Steering Clinic

The Calgary Dragon Boat Society is pleased to offer training sessions for those individuals interested in becoming a dragon boat steers person. Please complete the following form to register for this summer's upcoming clinics.


Session 1: June 17, 2018 (Sun) 10:00am to 2:00pm
Session 2: July 15, 2018 (Sun) 10:00am to 2:00pm

CDBS requires all steers to be approved by the Society.

  • A steersperson must know the General Dragon Boat Protocols & Safety Guidelines set out by CDBS. Read General Safety & Steering tips...
  • A steersperson needs to demonstrate they have command of the dragon boat and their team
  • A steersperson needs to demonstrate they can maneuver and line up a dragon boat at the start line in various water conditions

How to be approved or be qualified as a steers?

  • Have attended a steering clinic hosted by the CDBS and completed 10 hours of practice steering (confirmed by your team manager)
  • Identified to be a competent steers through existing experience
  • Have been previously approved by CDBS

Calgary Dragon Boat Steers (Facebook Group)

This group is for people that have attended the Calgary Dragon Boat Steers Clinic. The intent of this group is to bring the Calgary Steering Community together and to follow a steers progress after attending the clinic. Opportunities to steer for practices and special events will be posted here as well. Steers that are certified to cover will be paid $60/hr by the CDBS.

Q: Do I have to attend the steering clinic again if I have already attended a clinic?

A: No. Once you attend the clinic and get your 10 hours of verified steering practice by your team manager, we consider you a qualified steers.

Q: I've attended a steering clinic and passed, what happens now?

A: Great job! Your team manager will be notified via email and you must now complete 10 hours of steering practice to be a certified steers. The hours must be verified by your team manager back to the Calgary Dragon Boat Society.
