DID YOU KNOW? There is an ancient Chinese story about how giant pandas got their unique markings. According to the tale, there was a young girl who was a dear friend of these bears; unfortunately she…

Panda Cup 2018 is a partnership between the Calgary Dragon Boat Race & Festival and your Calgary Zoo to raise funds to support the care of the giant pandas during their visit to Calgary and the conservation of pandas in the wild. With fewer than 1,800 giant pandas left in the wild, caring for the four giant pandas at the Calgary Zoo has never been more critical. Giant pandas are an umbrella species and by helping to protect them, other species who inhabit their environment will also be protected. Each year the Calgary Zoo will contribute $1.4 million to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in China to support conservation initiatives such as breeding, habitat protection, reintroduction science and research.

The Calgary Zoo

is committed to saving species around the world and here at home. The zoo has received international recognition for its conservation research and in 2013, the Association of Zoos and Aquariums said, "The Calgary Zoo sets itself apart as one of the top zoos in the world.”

In 2018, the zoo opened Panda Passage and welcomed four giant pandas for a five-year stay. It is currently working towards providing a meaningful experience for the anticipated 1.6 million annual visitors. By caring for this iconic endangered species, the zoo can educate its community on how visitors can save and protect at-risk species.

In 2017, the zoo opened its most immersive animal habitat, Land of Lemurs. Building on its award-winning work safeguarding hippos in Ghana, Africa, the zoo is now expanding its focus to Madagascar to help one of the world’s most endangered primates.

Welcoming more than more than 1.2 million visitors in 2017, the zoo shared its messages of hope and inspiration through on-park experiences with its guests, encouraging them to make a difference in the world around them. One third of all Calgarians visit at least once per year and more than 75,000 Calgarians are zoo members.

The Calgary Zoo is the most visited zoo in Canada and since 2011 has consecutively been awarded a certificate of excellence from TripAdvisor. In 2015, the zoo was named one of the top three most respected organizations in Alberta and one of Alberta's 10 most beloved brands.

As a non-profit organization, the Calgary Zoo relies on its generous donors and sponsors to continue to deliver on its mission to take and inspire action to sustain wildlife and wild places. If you’re interested in other ways of supporting the zoo, please click here for more information.
